Old Bootleg "Racing Spice"

As soundcloud no longer is any fun AT ALL I am going to have to upload files to my Dropbox so you can download them so... Way back in the long ago (I think maybe... 2008?), when the men still had their own teeth and the women knew great dentists, I talked my good friend Simon Strick in to doing something foolish: a mash up of Racing Green and Aphrodite. This is the result:

Sunday 14th July 2013: Return to the Big Chill Bar

As luck would have it I've asked to play at one of my favourite venues in London this Sunday, The Big Chill Bar. I've been an irregular feature down there, somewhat like an occasional table, ever since it opened back in 2005. I played the first week it was opened, I've been lucky to play at their very special New years eve and New Years day parties, as part of their celebrations for the Big Chill festival and have been involved in a number of residencies there over the years. This time they've asked me to bring in the chill and downtempo, in a very welcome move to return the bar back to it's humble laid back musical roots. Something I'm more than happy to do. See you down there!

I Love You/You Won't Let Me - New Nightbus/Drum and Bass/Ambient Techno mix - Free mp3 download 320Kbps

Untitled-1985-Moebius.jpg

If I manage to do one "proper" mix a year I'll be happy. To define what a "proper" mix is - to separate it from any other mix I upload - a "proper" mix is one that takes planning and meticulous execution. Last year's mix was "Send in the Drones" and that took a year from planning to execution and I'm still happy with it; this has taken around 6 months of working out. It started with a Guardian article about new musical genres which defined the music by the amazing Joe Synkro as "Nightbus" a term I'd not heard before but one I was happy to adopt, even if I couldn't be sure that the article was being entirely serious. What I was aware was of a new way of looking at drum and bass, a genre which I'd spent a lot of my dj career playing and one I'd pretty much given up on. Listening to tracks from artists like Synkro, Submerge, Lapalux and the amazing new releases from Apollo (R & S records "ambient" side label) it became clear that a new wave of producers were taking lessons learned from Dubstep and applying them to Ambient Techno, R 'n B, Garage and Atmospheric Drum and Bass. I was fascinated. The result of that fascination is this mix. The first 30 minutes or so of it came together pretty easily, but then I couldn't work out where to turn next and it sat on my hard drive for 4 months, taunting me as all unfinished projects do. I almost released it as a mini mix, just to get the "monkey off my back" but I'm glad I waited and am able to release something more substantial, something worth listening to, hopefully again and again.

Though I still don't know if Nightbus is the right term for it.

DJ Set from Concrete, 28th July 2012

concrete1.jpeg

Well hello there. :) Sorry for the Radio silence over the last few months, hope you haven't been too lost without me. Things have been busy for me - I've been touring with Beardyman as his Visual dude for some European gigs and the usual sets at Concrete have been going well, but I've been neglecting the website even since "Send in the Drones", really; I wanted  to let that mix sit at the top of my soundcloud page and website, and not get bogged down with my usual regular updates, but now it's time to continue. So, to start with here's 72 minutes from the last time I played at Concrete - hope you like it. Here's the Tracklisting

Send in the Drones: New Ambient mix, Free Download, 320kbps

artworks-000021092278-h3dvlp-original.jpeg

Ok time for a welcome change of pace and a return to the chill out room. This mix I've been planning for over a year now, but hadn't found the time to sit down and really work on the idea until just recently. Initially I wanted to make a mix of purely droney, ambient music but I kept coming across tunes that fitted too well with the flow of the mix which weren't droney at all, but the title, had to stay, so for those Ambient Drone purists, I hope you won't mind the occasional forays into recognisable melody and occasional beat. :). My original idea was to showcase ambient drones and, apart from the notable exceptions, I think that idea is still at the heart of the mix. If you disagree, well... tough. It's very important for me to thank a few people who were instrumental in making this mix happen: Ali at Inspiral Cafe who originally muttered that he didn't like ambient drones which made me want to prove him wrong; Ryan at A Strangely Isolated Place blog for the Ex Confusion track that will be coming out in ASIP's new "Places" series, along with the Echaskech "626" track which was specifically written for my BT Tower video as well as general awesomeness for all his support of awesome electronic leftfield music, without which I wouldn't have found so much of the music that I love today; to Future Sequence for their wonderfully free "SEQUENCE" compilations which you can get from their website, to Andy from Digitonal for the recommendation of the fantastic Leaves "Leaving Eleven" compilation, another great ambient freebie; to Ed McFarlane for his inspirational soundcloud mix "Bells of Adderbury Church (bellsofadderburychurch by edmacfarlane) (where I shamelessly nicked the first track from); To Echaskech for their continued patience and support, as well as the awesome 626 track; To Tom Green (Another Fine Day), for him generosity and musical genius, and finally to Jean "Moebius" Giraud (http://www.moebius.fr/), who's artwork I've used for this, who sadly died March 10, 2012. Moebius was, without a doubt, the finest and most moving comic book artist I've ever come across, and though his style and influence can been seen in most of the sci-fi blockbusters over the last 30 years or more, it's his stories that touch me the most; The Airtight Garage, Incal, Arzach just to name a few all moved in a different plane from other writers & artists, blending sci fi with a journey into surrealism, humour and spirituality. Gir, you will be missed and remembered forever and this mix is dedicated to your memory. STOE ORKEO! Ok, sets from the archives for you. Before I went by the DJ name of Mach V (and before a certain Brazilian Drum and Bass Supremo came over to these shores) I went by the name of DJ Marky. This first set comes from 1997 when I was totally in love with Atmospheric Drum and Bass; I was a true Good Looking Organisation fan boy and these mixes goes to show how much. I'd actually thought I'd lost both of these when we got rid of all our tapes (as they were originally recorded and distributed to my friends on good old TDK AD90 cassettes) but I was contacted by an old friend of mine who now lives in Australia who still had copies of the tapes and had encoded them for me. So here it is for you it all it's splendour. They still sound amazing today, 15 years later. Here's the Tracklisting

The Bearding Hour, 20120219 - The Birthday One

Colt-45-Malt-Liquor.jpeg

Don't ask my why but every time I set about recording one of these Bearding Hours I am plagued with technical difficulties and this one is no different. It's slightly distorted (because I used Nicecast to record it instead of Traktor's far superior inbuilt recorder) one track jumped (not sure what that was about) I then hit the cue button by accident and it started a track again, I then managed to turn nicecast off without noticing so happily played for about 15 minutes without it being broadcasted nor recorded and then, right at the end of the set I managed to turn archiving off too early. Doomed to failure. But still, after a bit of sticky tape and a magnifying glass (in Audacity) and it's like none of that happened. Well, almost - you can still hear the distortion in a couple of places and the track skip is there, but I really can't be bothered to mend them as it would mean recording again and I don't want to do that as this was recorded on my birthday (45 years old, hence the picture) and there's a few birthday references in there for me and playing it through again would sort of defeat the object of me choosing those tracks. Still, you'd have to be very anal to hear the distortion and the track skip is only very slight annoying - at least it's in time. ;) Anyway of if you were that anal you wouldn't listen to The Bearding Hours sets as they're never an hour long anyway! Ok, alright, enough of my babble - I guess you'll be wanting to know about the Tracklisting

Welcome to the New Website (and have a couple of mixes while you're here)

393237_10150582073630775_597240774_11435486_686715709_n1.jpeg

Hello you lovely people and welcome to the newly designed DJ Mach V website. Lots of more helpful navigation and catagorisation has been added (above) as well as lots of helpful, handy social media plug ins (over to the right) so you can easily find my facebook page and tweets; there's even a tag cloud down below, which I've been wanting for a while. The work has all been done by my lovely wife, Miko Coffey, who's awesome talents have sourced and customised a brilliant new template for my posts as well as the frankly awesome new customised logo and backdrop, as well as a new backdrop to my twitter page. We've also moved the site onto new servers, which we have more admin control over.  I do hope you like it; please take some time in looking aorund, and please be vocal with your feedback in the comments below (or tweet me at @djmachv , if  you prefer). We've got a few more tweaks and shuffles to do but if you have any suggestions or find anything wrong, do let me know. I'm looking to expand the blog into other areas (occasional reviews, random photos, and anything else that comes to mind) and not just a endless continuum of "here's another mix for you" blog posts, but the new layout and navigation should mean that you can find the content that you want much easier and faster than before. In other news, for now I'm going to stop doing the weekly Back To Mine shows - they've been fun and very cathartic to do, but it's also a lot of work to keep them up on a regular basis. I'm not going to say that it's the death of the format as I'm not getting to play out all the amazing music I find, and I can see me wanting to share that with you all, but for now I need let it rest. The Club, in Second Life, will, of course, remain. If you do want a weekly hit of awesome mixes  I suggest you track the awesome Marky de Sade's 52 mixes project. I know I am.

Not that this means I'm going to abandon your ears completely; I still want to keep up The Bearding Hours, combined with occasional appearances at Monday Hates You, and, now I've migrated over to Traktor Pro 2 and an S2 control surface, it means I can record more live sets for you (most, if not all, the sets I've uploaded have previously recorded by Nicecast when broadcasting from home). Oh and if you ever thought of buying Traktor, it's great. Bye Bye DVS, Bye Bye Torq. It's been great, but, when you go back and read my blog posts over the last couple of years you get a sense of how unreliable Torq actually was and how much I was in denial about it. Traktor's stability, UI and function are worlds apart. But then so's the price. And if you want to argue whether, in using a control surface I'm actually a "DJ" anymore, go ahead, fill ya boots; I'm quite happy with using it. Anyway... I digress. Here are a couple of mixes you might have missed:

The first was recorded at London's Elektrowerks, as an opening set for the awesome new electronica club night "Fields" (@ldnflds) (picture above). As a warm up set I'm really happy with it. I hope it helps keep you warm, too. ;)

Live at Monday Hates You, 20111104 R

monday-hates-you.jpg

Ok, it's time for another one and, as Garage and Techno seem to be holding hands at the moment (thanks to labels like Hotflush), this one features a lot more Techno than Garage, something I've been looking forward to doing for a while. I've been sitting on this one for a month as I needed to find some time to edit it to an acceptable length (the original set was over 2 hours) and the second half wasn't all that much cop, to be honest so here is the edited version which makes me sound like a far better DJ than I actually was on the night. ;) This is also the last mix done with Torg, now I've got a Traktor S2 controller to play with so I'm hoping, for all future mixes, the sound quality will impove, the weird occasional stuttering and dragging will disappear from my sets as will the horrible machine code leak that seems to feature in all of the Torq recordings. Ok I'll shup now. ;) Monday Hates You 2

MHY Falling Down

Yes, it's that time again. Another fun packed journey out to the Garage and back, peformed/mixed live on Monday 17th Oct 2011, down at Back To Mine, in Second Life. We now have a Monday Hates You facebook site - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Monday-Hates-You/147540402011527 - all to help you get through the week by vigourously rubbing you down with a restorative sonic shower, specifically designed to aid and combat Mondayitis, which is something we at MHY International HQ (floating 2000 miles above sea level) take very seriously indeed.

Talking of facebook (yes, that thing is still going) as my old Musical Appreciation Group seems to be heading off to the great facebook group heaven, I've now started a facebook page for Mach V - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mach-V/145657268832564 - which I hope you'll take some time out of your busy day and go and click "like". My ego and hopefully your ears will be eternally grateful. :) Oh but now i really need to tell you the
