New Mix: Better Days FM Digital City 2021 Mix

Last Friday (December 3rd) I was lucky to be asked by Digital City to host their regular show on Betterdaysfm and here is the mix! There are two versions from the same set, the one on Mixcloud has my ‘bants’ on it (and is hosted on Betterdays FM’s Mixcloud so give them a follow) on it but if you just want the music I recorded one without that at the same time and that’s on my Hear This At page. New Old Mix: Inflight Entertainment

Back in the long, long ago. A time before time…

Well, 2004 to be almost precise. This set is based on the last set I played at The Rhythm Factory in Whitechapel for SoxaN’s Airways themed party which - i think - was on New Years Eve 2004. What I can remember is it was a tonne of fun and lots and lots of hard work. SoxaN was absolutely brilliant to be involved with but with us all juggling work and Soxan It was impossible to keep it going. It did make money and we paid everybody but it sadly wasn’t sustainable.

I did knock this mix out on CDs (as it was the style at the time) and some of you might still have the CD…. I’m not sure I do (if you do please let me know so I can fill in the gaps)! So, after an afternoon shazamming my own mixes and taking stabs in discogs and youtube, here’s the

New Mix: LIve at The Drome "808" Day in Second Life

It was lovely to be asked back in to Second Life again, this time by Eliza Moody the owner and curator of “The Drome” a virtual night club that’s been running nights forever in second life, this time to celebrate one of the notable Roland days that happen through out each year - 303, 606, 808 and 909 (not forgetting 101, 202, 404, 505…). Sadly no photos were taken as apparently they were too busy giggling as I got my second life animations all confused and was breakdancing on the decks. Ah well.. you’ll just have to do with the

New Mix: Live at The Pony Club, in Second Life, 25/4/2020

It’s lovely to be invited back in to Second Life to DJ. Back in 2008 or so clubs in Second Life really nailed down how to have a socially rewarding intimate clubbing experience with a globally distant audience - you can dress up as glam or grungy as you like, go to outlandishly designed club spaces and dance the night away, chatting both publicly and privately and it never got in the way of the music. I’m delighted to sat that the scene is still there vibrant and weird and wonderful as ever.

The set played was mostly constructed to be a 90 minute studio mix but as this gig came along just as I was ready to release it so I played it out live and added another 30 minutes to the end which really fleshed it out nicely. I did fluff a mix so I’ve actually cheated and cut in the recorded bit so, if it sound’s a bit weird around the Rob Clouth/Daniel Avery tracks - it’s that. You’ll have to trust me that it’s better this way. ;) Anyway here’s the

New Mix: A Broad Range - Together 2018

“Here it is the groove slightly transformed Just a bit of a break from the norm
Just a little somethin' to break the monotony
Of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be
A little bit out of control it's cool to dance
But what about the groove that soothes that moves romance
Give me a soft subtle mix...”

Here’s the “studio” cut of a mix I performed at Awamu’s third “Together” festival. It’s pretty much what I played but I added a longer introduction to it (which might help it last longer on SoundCloud) - the opening lines are from Grant Green’s amazing “Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry’s” lp - and there is a “bonus” track at the end that I really wanted to play but I knew time wouldn’t allow it, bcut for you, dear listener, you get to experience the genius of Raj Pannu’s “FSOJ”. The third track is a mashup of Skee Mask’s “Session Amp” and MJ Cole’s UK garage classic “Sincere” with extra beats and production courtesy of the ever patient Andy G from Echaskech.

Hope you like it! Here’s the...

New Mix: In Dingo Veritas

Recorded live in Second Life at Veritas Club, warming up for the magnificent Theatre of Delays it's an over 2 hour selection weaving between electronica, deep, tech and acid house. Thanks to Carrmine and Nadia for letting me play. Oh and sorry about it being in mono at the beginning - bit of technical glitch - if you wait 20 minutes it switches over tp Super Stereo Sound eventually

New Mix: A Return To The Second Life

Well that went exceedingly well. Restart was very well attended and it was so good to see so many old faces and reminded me the genuine power and depth of Second Life friendships and how incredibly fun clubbing was (probably still is) in Second Life. There simply isn't anything else quite like it... Ok so this mix I wanted to do something with some of the longer tracks in my collection (as I knew that I might be busy chatting and saying hello to so many old friends). The recording... hmmm, there's a slight distortion on some of the bass frequencies which, without recording the whole thing again, I couldn't get rid of in 'post' which is a shame because as a 2 hour listening experience I'm really happy with the flow. I suggest you don't listen to it as closely as I do and you should be fine. ;) I should apologise for including a couple of tracks from the last mix but they are too good to just play once out. Hope you enjoy it.

As for actually returning to Second Life... I can't see me doing it. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing experience and you can spend a LOT of time in there, but technology has moved on (the graphics were never it's strong suit) and socially networked VR experiences will trounce all over this once that takes hold. And honestly I don't have the time to dedicate to it as I did. But the people are amazing and those friendships I hope they last until we leave this place...

Newish Oldish Mix: Live at The Dance Tunnel 2013 (First Set)

Back in 2013 I was lucky to be asked to play as support DJ for a Fields LDN night promoting Max Cooper, The Ghosting Season and The Slow Revolt. Sadly The Dance Tunnel is scheduled to close this August and it’s a cracking club so if you get a chance to go get your arse down there!

Oval Space Warm Up Set 20150305

Oval Space Warm Up Set 20150305 by Djmachv on Mixcloud

A lot can happen in a week.

Last Friday, whilst my wife and I were having afternoon tea at Ruben's in Victoria, my phone chirpred it's merry little sms chirp and there was a simple message from my friend Grant at Agency X saying "Would you like to do warmup for (Max Cooper's) Emergence? Has to stay not banging". Naturally  I jumped at the chance - this is Max Cooper's new AV one man show in a prime venue in London, under the auspicious gaze of LWE - a superb event promoter making deep impressions in the night club scene with uber hot DJs and dance music acts and as part of their London Electronic Arts Festival . "Sure, I'd love to" I replied. I was already getting excited.

I'd not been really thinking about DJing; I lost my Concrete residency last year and had turned my hand to doing weddings which is a completely different mindset to this - still fun, still rewarding, but you are playing what the couple and the audience want to hear - this would be different: I could play what I wanted within reason, I understood what a Warm Up slot means and there was the helpful remit of "Has to stay not banging".

Has to stay not banging. Not banging. HAS TO STAY.

NOT.

BANGING.

Hmmm. The words echoed around my dusty and cavernous brain, like a Deep House looping vocal hook. Why would Grant say this? He knows that I'm not really that up for the banging tunes, why would he feel he needed to stress this? After a few more texts back and forth it made sense, because Max's set would start ambient and to give it the best opportunity to grow from that point you don't want the act before to be slamming out BIG TUNES building up the audience's expectation to think that whatever follows would be EVEN BIGGER. Fair enough. This was the remit and it was a remit I was happy with. I had two hours to play with and so I set myself to quietly build for an hour and a half and then half an hour to break it down.

So... why am I telling you all of this? Well... here's the thing: This set isn't two hours long; its 2 hours 20 minutes long. That might not mean anything to you but it might go to help you understand why, from 1h 35 the mix descends into an ambient wash out for 20 minutes and then starts to pick up again at 1hr 55... which might correspond to the moment I got told that Max wouldn't be starting at 9:00 but at 9:20.

:D

This isn't a criticism nor a whinge. Far from it. At most it's an explanation of the flow of the set you're about to listen to, and more of a reminder to me (and to anyone else who cares to listen) not to plan too rigidly, not to be too prescriptive and to remind oneself that no matter what you think the plan is, it's not.

Hope you enjoy it

Old Bootleg "Racing Spice"

As soundcloud no longer is any fun AT ALL I am going to have to upload files to my Dropbox so you can download them so... Way back in the long ago (I think maybe... 2008?), when the men still had their own teeth and the women knew great dentists, I talked my good friend Simon Strick in to doing something foolish: a mash up of Racing Green and Aphrodite. This is the result:

New Old Mix - From Winter To Spring (2011)

This ones from the archives, from 2011. I'd always enjoyed what I'd set out to do with the mix but was never happy with the execution of the mixes and it certainly feels like a rough, skechbook mix to my ears, but 3 years on and I've not actually gone back and tidied up all the messy blending, pulls and slides (it was done on Torq - the belt drive of DVS systems). You do deserve better, but in the meantime It's time for me to let it go. Try it on a Friday night after a bad day at work and your lacking the motivation to get your glad rags on and get out dancing. So open the wine, sit back and see if it doesn't get your toes tapping. :) http://www.mixcloud.com/djmachv/from-winter-to-spring/

I Love You/You Won't Let Me - New Nightbus/Drum and Bass/Ambient Techno mix - Free mp3 download 320Kbps

Untitled-1985-Moebius.jpg

If I manage to do one "proper" mix a year I'll be happy. To define what a "proper" mix is - to separate it from any other mix I upload - a "proper" mix is one that takes planning and meticulous execution. Last year's mix was "Send in the Drones" and that took a year from planning to execution and I'm still happy with it; this has taken around 6 months of working out. It started with a Guardian article about new musical genres which defined the music by the amazing Joe Synkro as "Nightbus" a term I'd not heard before but one I was happy to adopt, even if I couldn't be sure that the article was being entirely serious. What I was aware was of a new way of looking at drum and bass, a genre which I'd spent a lot of my dj career playing and one I'd pretty much given up on. Listening to tracks from artists like Synkro, Submerge, Lapalux and the amazing new releases from Apollo (R & S records "ambient" side label) it became clear that a new wave of producers were taking lessons learned from Dubstep and applying them to Ambient Techno, R 'n B, Garage and Atmospheric Drum and Bass. I was fascinated. The result of that fascination is this mix. The first 30 minutes or so of it came together pretty easily, but then I couldn't work out where to turn next and it sat on my hard drive for 4 months, taunting me as all unfinished projects do. I almost released it as a mini mix, just to get the "monkey off my back" but I'm glad I waited and am able to release something more substantial, something worth listening to, hopefully again and again.

Though I still don't know if Nightbus is the right term for it.

Well hello there. :) Sorry for the Radio silence over the last few months, hope you haven't been too lost without me. Things have been busy for me - I've been touring with Beardyman as his Visual dude for some European gigs and the usual sets at Concrete have been going well, but I've been neglecting the website even since "Send in the Drones", really; I wanted  to let that mix sit at the top of my soundcloud page and website, and not get bogged down with my usual regular updates, but now it's time to continue. So, to start with here's 72 minutes from the last time I played at Concrete - hope you like it. Here's the Tracklisting

Send in the Drones: New Ambient mix, Free Download, 320kbps

artworks-000021092278-h3dvlp-original.jpeg

Ok time for a welcome change of pace and a return to the chill out room. This mix I've been planning for over a year now, but hadn't found the time to sit down and really work on the idea until just recently. Initially I wanted to make a mix of purely droney, ambient music but I kept coming across tunes that fitted too well with the flow of the mix which weren't droney at all, but the title, had to stay, so for those Ambient Drone purists, I hope you won't mind the occasional forays into recognisable melody and occasional beat. :). My original idea was to showcase ambient drones and, apart from the notable exceptions, I think that idea is still at the heart of the mix. If you disagree, well... tough. It's very important for me to thank a few people who were instrumental in making this mix happen: Ali at Inspiral Cafe who originally muttered that he didn't like ambient drones which made me want to prove him wrong; Ryan at A Strangely Isolated Place blog for the Ex Confusion track that will be coming out in ASIP's new "Places" series, along with the Echaskech "626" track which was specifically written for my BT Tower video as well as general awesomeness for all his support of awesome electronic leftfield music, without which I wouldn't have found so much of the music that I love today; to Future Sequence for their wonderfully free "SEQUENCE" compilations which you can get from their website, to Andy from Digitonal for the recommendation of the fantastic Leaves "Leaving Eleven" compilation, another great ambient freebie; to Ed McFarlane for his inspirational soundcloud mix "Bells of Adderbury Church (bellsofadderburychurch by edmacfarlane) (where I shamelessly nicked the first track from); To Echaskech for their continued patience and support, as well as the awesome 626 track; To Tom Green (Another Fine Day), for him generosity and musical genius, and finally to Jean "Moebius" Giraud (http://www.moebius.fr/), who's artwork I've used for this, who sadly died March 10, 2012. Moebius was, without a doubt, the finest and most moving comic book artist I've ever come across, and though his style and influence can been seen in most of the sci-fi blockbusters over the last 30 years or more, it's his stories that touch me the most; The Airtight Garage, Incal, Arzach just to name a few all moved in a different plane from other writers & artists, blending sci fi with a journey into surrealism, humour and spirituality. Gir, you will be missed and remembered forever and this mix is dedicated to your memory. STOE ORKEO!
